I dreamed up this front carry a few weeks ago to get some more service out of my 3-yard Bara Barn knot shawl. It’s more secure and comfortable than a one-shoulder carry with no waist support, so it’s a good option for heavy babies and wigglers. I shared the method on TheBabyWearer, and photos were demanded, so I had my 6-year-old take the following glamour shots to illustrate. They are, uh, utilitarian. I share them only because I have no shame.
To do this carry, you need at least nine feet of fabric suitable for baby wrapping. I’m using a Barn Barn knot shawl made especially for carrying babies, but other fabric would work. Choose a natural fabric such as cotton, linen, hemp, silk dupioni, or wool, and make sure the fabric is strong enough to carry your baby’s weight and that it has enough texture to hold a knot without slipping.
Here’s what to do:
First, grab a handful of wrap near the end.
Then stuff it in your pocket.
Bring the wrap across your front.
Then around your back.
Then around your front again.
And around your back and over your shoulder.
Load your baby into the loop on your front.
Get the tail out of your pocket, and bring the wrap under the baby’s bottom, spreading across his bottom. Do a better job spreading than shown in this pic.
Tie a strong knot, adjust your shoulder and your shirt, and you’re done!
how cool! i love those colors…
That looks downright easy. Probably because it is!
Yes, it’s definitely an easy one! Someone on TBW used a slightly longer wrap and tied it with a slipknot before loading the baby, then tightened … so this carry can be completely pre-tied, too.
I’m glad I’m finally getting my “wrapping is easy” message through to my slightly stubborn friend Martha!
You make me want to try that! I haven’t yet braved the world of wrapping but plan to with the new one on the way. (I just found your blog today and am stoked.)
Welcome, Jenna! Wrapping is not nearly as complicated as it gets credit for, and it’s such a comfy and cuddly way to carry a baby. 🙂 You can search our posts for “Simple Pieces of Cloth” and find plenty of wrapping info. I particularly love the video of the daddy wrapping a newborn.
hi, just found your site (referred from you actually, you seem so nice) and I’m the one having problems with her pouch… this looks so easy. Maybe I’ll get some fabric…..
I have to say, I watched the video of the dad wrapping a newborn and it made me so happy I’m such a dork (maybe some kind of post post partum hormone surge ;), I can’t get mine right but that gives me hope!
You are too brilliant for words. I just got a bed sheet from Ikea; vibrant colors. I’m going to use it for this too! I just accomplished the ‘wear your baby with a sheet’ from this site, now I’m going to do this too! I just bookmarked this page. This is awesome!
I love this website. I’m learning so much. Your six-year old takes great photos, AND thank God, bless God for YOU. If you had shame, then we would not get to learn anything or see this. I’m so happy you have NO shame. Keep it up. We need more Moms like you who can INSPIRE us and who put Ego aside and give us good info. I’m inspired by you and your courage to post. You look great, the photos are terrific and more importantly, the wrap is brilliant and easy. Thanks for the great info!
