About BWI of Birmingham

Babywearing International of Birmingham is the Birmingham, Alabama, chapter of Babywearing International, Inc., a nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting babywearing through education and support. BWI of Birmingham was formed in 2006 as “Magic City Slingers.” The public service announcement above was filmed here in Birmingham at Leo Ticheli Productions and features all local babywearers.

Why babywearing?

Baby carriers are powerful tools for parents and caregivers, enabling them to hold their babies much more comfortably and securely than they would otherwise. They help a new dad put a fussy newborn to sleep. They let a new mom use both hands to make a sandwich. They let an experienced parent or caregiver carry a baby on her back and wash the dishes, do the laundry, take a hike, weed the garden … all while keeping the baby safe and content.

Why an organization?

In many cultures, mothers carry their babies in rectangular pieces of cloth or in cloth carriers with straps, and the practical art of carrying a baby is passed on from generation to generation. This tradition is not deeply rooted in American culture, however, so our group and similar groups throughout the country were formed to bring together experienced babywearers with parents and caregivers interested in learning to use slings.

Do you sell baby carriers?

No, BWI of Birmingham does not sell baby carriers. We do, however, have a carrier lending library, and members can borrow carriers to try. Membership is $30 per year. Carriers are borrowed at meetings and are due back at the beginning of the following meeting.

Is this a commercial-free blog?

Yes.  Neither BWI of Birmingham nor any of our bloggers receives any money, products, services, or other consideration for posting anything in this blog. We post links to information about particular carriers and other products solely because we have found that people are interested in this information.
