The first meeting of Magic City Slingers was September 13, 2006. It wasn’t heavily publicized, and there were four people there … including two leaders.
It hasn’t been that quiet since. It hasn’t been anything remotely nearly that quiet since.
This September, Magic City Slingers will celebrate one year of promoting babywearing in Birmingham, Alabama. (And, via this blog, all over the world. We have readers on at least three continents. As we say around here, “Hey, y’all!”) We have a month of celebration and outreach planned.
Monday, September 3: MCS brochures and information will be available at the Alabama Birth Coalition’s “Celebrate Birth on Labor Day” event from 2-6 p.m. at Triangle Park in Forest Park, Birmingham.
Wednesday, September 5: Wrap Along at our regular monthly meeting at 10 a.m. at Shades Valley Community Church in West Homewood. Our topic this month is wraparound slings.
Wednesday, September 12: Sling Along at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Meet at 9:45 a.m. for a 45-minute docent-led tour of the Birmingham Museum of Art beginning at 10 a.m. and focusing on the highlights of the museum and the art of motherhood and family life. Please let us know by September 10 if you’ll be joining us so the museum can provide the appropriate number of docents.
Saturday, September 15: We’ll be discussing and demonstrating babywearing at the Preparing for International Adoption Seminar at the Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church, sponsored by the UAB International Adoption Clinic. If you can be a part of the demonstration team, please let a leader know!
Friday, September 21: Sling Along at Aldridge Gardens. Meet at 10 a.m. and take a stroll through the beautiful gardens.
Tuesday, September 25: We’ll be discussing and demonstrating babywearing for the Brookwood Hospital Breast Feeding Support Group, which meets from 1-3 at The Church at Brook Hills. If you can help, please let a leader know!
Saturday, September 29: Sling Along and Potluck Picnic at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. Bring the whole family and meet at 10:30 a.m. for an easy hike followed by a picnic lunch. Bring a covered dish that will be OK in your car during the hike. Magic City Slingers will provide plates, utensils, and drinks. Please let us know you’re coming (and how many are in your party) by Thursday, September 27, so we will have enough to go around.
All events are free to attend. Come celebrate with us!
